Mako, do the input method packages we provided not support Chinese?

I cannot find any chinese input methods either. I am using ubuntu in "english
mode" but I still should be able to install a chinese IME in order to chat with
friends or do mixed language wordprocessing. I tried unsuccessfully to install
scim and scim-chewing (traditional chars) and scim-pinyin (simplified chars).
Using LiveCD array-6. This would be nice to get in Ubuntu 5.10.

There are several options for Chinese input in universe, including the ones
mentioned in comment #2.

You said that you tried unsuccessfully to install them, but it is not clear what
this means. Did the installation fail, or were you unable to discover how to
use the input methods once you installed them?

I am the Debian maintainer of scim packages. I am now using a hoary system with
scim and scim-chinese without problems.

From other reports, I suppose you are a traditional Chinese user. So
scim-chewing should be what you want. However looking at your comments (the
package name scim-pinyin), I suspect you are using some (more) unofficial
packages compiled against scim 1.2.x, instead of the ones in Ubuntu universe
which is for scim 1.0.x. That won't work since they are not compatible. Would
you please clarify which packages are you trying to install?

If you would like to test, I can try to provide scim-chewing packages for hoary
(I believe they are not in universe, since they are not in Debian yet). And if
things goes well, I am going to try pushing it into universe for hoary+1
(especially as scim-chewing is in Debian NEW queue now).

There seems to be a plethora of Chinese input methods in "IIIMF". Perhaps Ubuntu
could include all the open-source input methods listed on IIIMF's page? I see no
reason not to include IIIMF in addition to UIM and SCIM.
