Binary package hint: ldm
Frequently, when entering the password at the login screen or during password prompts (such as when launching synaptic, when the administrative password is needed), everything reverts to the startup screen and the entire system just hangs there.

Is that LightDM (as in, Ubuntu's new display manager) or LDM (LTSP's display manager)?
The above data shows that "ldm" isn't installed on your system so it seems like you're instead talking of "lightdm".
