Bug Description

hi unity freezes on me every so often about once a day, pitty I really like unity

1).
username@host:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04

2).
username@host:~$ apt-cache policy unity
unity:
  Installed: 3.8.12-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.8.12-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.8.12-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     3.8.10-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages

3). I expected unity to continue running and responding

4). the whole show locks up and nothing responds

so I CTRL+ALT+F1 to get a console and run sudo shutdown -r now to get things back
I'd rather restart unity or X don't know how

from your Ctrl+Alt+F1 terminal just run "unity --replace", and it should reload & be fine again. Can also be done when logged into a graphical terminal if its still responding.

Well it's time I updated this bug, basically it now only occurs, after running unity for days (like a week or more) so the problem seems to be slowly going away, also it seams to be related to system load

Hello,

I'm not using Unity, but Gnome Shell, but the symptoms are the same.
It's not about running days, it's more about system load.

This morning, I had to reboot my system three time because of X freeze.
I also have [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id in kern.log

If there is anyway I can help. It's very annoying.

Damien

It just happened again. There's definitly a link between the framebuffer error message and the UI freeze.

It's really a graphic thing, as all my applications are still running (music still playing, vmware workastation responding to cli command)

I'm seeing this too. Clean install of 11.10 on a ThinkPad T520 (SandyBridge chip).

Using a vanilla GNOME 3 session (No Unity, no compiz) - same symptoms: X hangs but machine is otherwise OK.

Alexandre mentioned VMWare... For me, this is semi-reliably reproducible by running 3D applications in a Windows 7 guest using VMWare workstation. Forcing S3TC texture compression to enabled is necessary to get 3D acceleration in guests, which may be relevant...?

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help move this forward.

I was wrong... What I'm seeing is a gnome-shell hang. Just hit it again with no drm errors in syslog. X is still live but gnome-shell is stuck on on a futex wait.

killall -9 gnome-shell from another VT "fixes" it.

Sorry for the noise...

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.3 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.3-rc2 fixed the issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.3-rc2'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The drm error messages are pointing to a fault in the kernel, so I'll close out the task against the 2D X driver.

The message "*ERROR* invalid framebuffer id" is innocuous and not related to the freezing issue.

I'm experiencing the same issue as mentioned as in several comments, specifically #13, #14, #39, that is using gnome-shell on 11.10; I especially get a freeze of the shell when scrolling (w/ mouse wheel or by pressing middle button and dragging the document) through a PDF in evince, but I also got it once in firefox. I can go to a VT and usually I restart the lightdm service to get back to my desktop. I am now on the v3.3-rc6-precise kernel and I could still reproduce the freeze by grabbing a PDF document in evince with the middle mouse button and then shifting it around like a maniac.

Some other remarks:
. My laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 (ATI was also mentioned earlier in this report so I wonder why only intel drivers have been tagged here).
. I really don't see how this is a duplicate of #808384, it seems like a completely different issue, except that there's an error message in kern.log: [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id. This error sometimes, not always, occurs in kern.log right after a freeze.
