Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-generic

I get no sound out of my laptop using feisty (linux-generic-image-2.6.20-4).

The mixers all report that there is no sound device at all. The PC beeper works.

My hardware is described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ThinkpadT43p-2668

Please attach via the web interface (do no paste into comments) the output of "dmesg".

Also, please, for the sake of testing, try 2.6.20-5.

Thanks

Is 2.6.20-5 already available? I can not find it on my mirror yet.

I'll attach the dmesg as soon as I find the time to reboot into the 2.6.20 kernel again (I went back to 2.6.19-7-generic which works fine) since having no sound and no WLAN sucks pretty hard;-)

Found it! Problem persists with 2.6.20-5-generic. I'll attach a dmesg output.

Fairly certain that this is because of the atheros crash in your dmesg. When that gets fixed, your sound will likely work too.

I don't think this is atheros related. I have the same problems. No sound at all. But on my system everything looks OK. The intel8x0 driver is loaded and the devices are shown in alsamixer, amarok, etc. The playing starts, the channels are not muted, but I don't here anything. I did an upgrade from edgy yesterday. There everything worked OK.

I also have a thinkpad t43p-2668(-4NG).

dmesg output attached. Let me know, if you need further information.

I have removed the atheros modules from my system and get no more oops during bootup.

Sound is still missing...

The mixers do work and I can change all the usual settings in those applications, but there is nothing to be heared, independent of the mixer settings I choose.

Maybe that hardware mixer of the thinkpads that is usually set with the volume up/down buttons is muted? That mixer is not one of the "normal" ones and can not get set in software AFAIK.

Using the volume up/down buttons changes the master volume on feisty. Maybe it is leaving the hardware mixer alone now? This works with older ubuntu releases (and feisty with kernels < 2.6.20-1).

Confirming. I have a 2668-W12 (AC97 sound card) and have the same issue - I can change the volume and mute/unmute various mixers, but no sound comes from the external speakers or the headphone jack.

I had no such problems with 2.6.20-4, though.

I reinstalled libc and restarted and the problem disappeared. After further analysis, I think my issue is bug #80893, actually. Leaving as confirmed since Rolf seems to have the same issue, though.

I found the problem:

In alsamixer (or kmix, or whatever you use) the "Headphone jack sense" switch must be muted / disabled. Voila -> Sound is back again!

Hmmm. hunger, can you play around with the settings in alsamixer and see if it resolves the issue?

Success!

I must turn of "Headphone jack sense" and "Line jack sense" at the same time to get my sound.

When I tried this before I always had one or the other enabled:-(

I just did a clean reinstall using feisty herd 5 today. I had been running my t43 just fine with sound on a feisty that had been upgraded from edgy. But now my sound isn't there. It's like all the symptoms above - I can change all the sound volumes, but I get no output.

turning off headphone jack sense and line jack sense do not make any difference. (Although I must say even if that _was_ the solution, not having headphone jack sensing working still seems like a bug)

I'll be happy to paste as much of the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems as you'd like...
