Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

Hi,

Using ubuntu 11.04 with unity interface I have a weird problem with my mouse pointer: some times I cannot click links/buttons/inputs in random applications (google chrome, intellij idea, gnome-appearance-properties, etc).

There is some info that can help you:

$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2HDM id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Dell WMI hotkeys id=13 [slave keyboard (3)]

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04

Thanks for your great work!

It only affects the Y mouse coordinate. I noticed that when it "happens" I can only click the lower part of the button. In Chrome I have click slightly above the hyperlinks. The problem is always gone after moving the window hosting the button(s)/links on the screen. I suspect that the height of the menu bar (that is now moved from the window onto the panel in Unity) is still sometimes included in the Y calculations causing the problem.

But maybe is not a random one.
I have attached an images on the top it shows how the link should appear and on the bottom how it appears when the pointer is under the workspace switcher line. The mouse in this horizontal line doesn't working.

I am experiencing the same issue described above on a clean install of 11.04, running the classic (gnome) interface. This bug makes it incredibly awkward to use Libreoffice for any substantial amount of work, as the cursor only allows text selection *sometimes* while refusing to change from a pointer to a text selection tool at other times. Case in point, right now in Firefox I cannot select some portions of the text I am writing, while other portions of the text seem to work perfectly.

Same problem here. Noticed that the problem is somehow alleviated by maximising the window. However switching between windows or resizing them makes the problem come back. This is really driving me up the wall. Hope this gets resolved soon.

Also noticed that it seem to affect everything horizontally to the problem area, when it is happening.
When the windows is moved or re sized in any way the problem goes away for a short while.

I have a Fujitsu N751 Laptop running Ubuntu 11.04.
Is also happening on my desktop "intel DP67DE motherboard with I7-2600k cpu with Nvidia 7900 graphics".

Quite a few clients are also complaining about this problem.
I never noticed a problem like this in any previous Ubuntu version since Ubuntu 8.04

Hey cazacugmihai,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

Hi Bryce,

For me, the problem is solved. I have already 2-3 months since this issue disappears (I'm still using Ubuntu 11.04).

Thanks for the updates!
Mihai
