Edgy corrupts USB memory stick - both i386 and x86_64

Bug Description

Confirmed in two Edgy installations: 32 bits ABIT AN832X SLI motherboard, and x86_64
HP xw9300 (TYAN K8W3 motherboard).

If I copy a big file from command-prompt to USB stick, and then go to the icon and select
"Safely Remove", the USB stick will immediately unmount, instead of popping up a dialog
like it did in Dapper. Even worse, the directory entry for the file is written (the file shows as
full size), but the file will of course be truncated, causing corruption on the disk.

Please Fix !!!

In Dapper, when I copied a big file from the console prompt, and rapidly went to the desktop
icon and selected Safely Remove, a dialog box will pop-up saying something like "waiting...".
Then it will dissapear and my copy and unmount will be complete.

Yup, I can confirm this, very annoying and potentially dangerous bug. When I copy stuff to sdcard or usb stick (both automounted by kde) it goes very quick. Then I click safely remove and assume everything is done when the device icon has disappeared. It's not! On my usb-stick there is a flashing light indicating it is still busy, my sdcard however shows nothing, so i don't even know when it's safe to remove it. Consequently, I often mis some files (or have corrupted ones) when I check later.

Two things are wrong here in my opinion;
- there should be a clear indication when safely remove is really done (apparently already available in dapper)
- write cache should be switched of completely for removable devices. people (like me) tend to be sloppy and remove sticks whenever they please to ...without safely removing them.

Thanks for confirming this. I was going crazy wondering why nobody is complaining. I figured that this is a very common usage. Did you try Dapper ? In Dapper it worked great. Also, what is your hardware ? I can confirm on at least 3 diff computers, 2 of them x86_64 (AMD) and a Dell E1705 with dual-core Intel centrino.

Thanks! I was going crazy wondering why nobody else noticed.
How can we raise the awareness of this ????
