Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

The error message reported in the log file is normally transient; Please try performing the update again.

If the same issue occurs, please try to identify which process is locking the file by running:

   sudo fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat

If this returns a result you could try killing the process and completing the update again.

Please update this bug report if this resolves your issue.

Thanks

I'm also having trouble upgrading samba. I'm getting the following output:

Setting up samba (2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.2) ...
start: Job failed to start
invoke-rc.d: initscript nmbd, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing samba (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 samba
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

The funny thing is that samba is currently working! I tried to remove with purge but after reinstall the same thing happens again when installing (it installs but ends with the same error)
