Niall Murphy marked Bug #771810 as a duplicate of this one, however, it should be the other way around, since James Hunt filed Bug #771810 more than a month before this one, and it contains more information than this. Regardless, both bug reports are indeed for the same issue.

This also looks a lot like bug #776499, another bug about missing menus with several duplicate bugs. Should they be merged?

This only occurs when you start gvim from a terminal. If you start gvim from the Unity interface, or from Nautilus, the menu appears correctly.

As stated elsewhere, if you start gvim in the foreground, this doesn't happen either.

Presume that what is happening is that the unity menu is attempting to bind to the initially started process, but instead should be binding to the process that gvim forks when you run it from the terminal.
