Bug Description

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

Fresh install of Edgy, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic SMP
Installed Nvidia graphics driver, default updates
Installed MySQL 5.0 server with adept - version 5.024a-9
Attempting to start server with mysqld_safe results in this error in syslog:

mysqld got signal 4;
Dec 31 23:27:54 ithilien mysqld[8696]: This could be
because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this
binary
Dec 31 23:27:54 ithilien mysqld[8696]: or one of the
libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly
built,
Dec 31 23:27:54 ithilien mysqld[8696]: or
misconfigured. This error can also be caused by
malfunctioning hardware.

best to scrape up some info that will hopefully help
diagnose
Dec 31 23:27:54 ithilien mysqld[8696]: the problem,
but since we have already crashed, something is
definitely wrong
Dec 31 23:27:54 ithilien mysqld[8696]: and this may
fail.

Workaround:
installed pre-compiled static binaries from mysql.com. Note that dynamically linked binaries don't run, because they require libstdc++ 5, and Egdy uses libstdc++ 6, which breaks some backward compatibility.
