Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Ubuntu Version 11.04
Banshee Version 2.0.0-2Ubuntu.1
From the GUI if an attempt to run is made nothing at all happens (no crash or Banshee displayed), but it you run in the terminal you get the following :-

 at Mono.Addins.Serialization.BinaryXmlReader.Skip () <0x00068>
  at Mono.Addins.Serialization.BinaryXmlReader.Skip () <0x00068>
  at Mono.Addins.Serialization.BinaryXmlReader.Skip () <0x00068>
  at Mono.Addins.Serialization.BinaryXmlReader.Skip () <0x00068>

this just loops until you hit ctl+c to stop the execution any idea on how to fix this error ?

I have the same thing as in "banshee will not start". Running it from terminal gives me this:

[Info 21:12:48.798] Running Banshee 2.0.1: [Ubuntu 11.04 (linux-gnu, x86_64) @ 2011-05-07 15:17:23 UTC]
[Info 21:12:49.924] Updating web proxy from GConf
[Info 21:12:49.989] All services are started 0,972886

Note: it says banshee 2.0.1, but I only installed that version to see if my probleem was fixed. I also have it with 2.0.0.

The weird thing is though, Banshee did run after I upgraded to Natty (from 10.10) and it still does run as sudo (output from sudo terminal is attached).

This made me think I have a corrupt config so I removed (backupped) ~/config/banshee-1 but Banshee still doesn't load. The same three lines as given before are in my terminal.

One thing I must note is that I'm running kernel 2.6.39-rc5 with AMD/Ati Catalyst 8.841 (needed to support my RC receiver).

UPDATE
from the terminal if you run the command Sudo banshee -debug banshee runs fine so it would appear I have a permissions problem

You should not run banshee with sudo permissions, is not needed. Have you tried to remove your ".config/banshee-1" and ".cache/banshee-1" directories from your home and then try banshee again (without sudo)?

I just removed both directories but Banshee still doesn't load.. in the terminal these lines appear:

[Info 22:57:25.277] Running Banshee 2.0.1: [Ubuntu 11.04 (linux-gnu, x86_64) @ 2011-05-07 15:17:23 UTC]
[Info 22:57:27.745] Updating web proxy from GConf
[Info 22:57:27.872] All services are started 1,178624

And a banshee window appears, but without any controls on it, the window stays white/gray indefinitely.

Any ideas?

The only way I could banshee to run without sudo was to delete the partition and reinstall Ubuntu, which allows Banshee to run from the GUI but to try and sync a device you just get permission errors (see screen shots) I'm just wondering what I have done wrong

Jim, could you post now the output of "banshee --debug" in a separated file please? seems like you don't have permissions to read/write in "/media/ZEN STONE"

Jim just one more thing, could you install the package mtp-tools and then run "mtp-detect" and attach all the output information of this command, thank you.

The result from mtp-detect is

jim@jim-Vostro-1700:~$ mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.0.6

Listing raw device(s)
   No raw devices found.
jim@jim-Vostro-1700:~$

The above is true no matter what player I plug in

Zen Stone 1GB - Banshee read and wrote to this one fine
Zen Stone Plus 2GB - Banshee detected this one but had permission problems
Zen Stone Plus with speaker - Banshee did not detect at all (Ubuntu added it as a drive and not a player)
Copy Ipod nano 1GB - Banshee read and wrote to this one fine
Copy Ipod nano 2GB - Banshee read and wrote to this one fine
Copy ipod nano 4GB - Banshee read and wrote to this one fine
RockChip 8GB MP5 player - Ubuntu did not detect
Apad - Banshee did not detect it.

but I did delete the partition again and installed 64 bit version of Ubuntu 11.04 (instead of 32 bit) which made the Zen Stone 1GB work !!! is there a difference between 32 & 64 bit ?
Other thing why does Banshee not detect SD cards & usb drives ?? I use SD cards for music in the car. A 32GB card give enough audio storage for a long trip but Banshee can not sync them.
Regards Jim

@Kamus: Should I file a new bug report for my problem? I think I'm experiencing another bug then Jim since all I get is a non-responding white window.

Btw, here's my mtp-detect response:

ernst@ernst-laptop:~/.config/banshee-1$ mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.0.6

Listing raw device(s)
   No raw devices found.
