Typing with the focus on the view should shift the focus to the locationbar so that the text appears there.

We prefer to use the standard behavior typing letters filter and select elements in the current view. It a behavior most gnome applications got, it's already working in list view column view, just icon view is missing this functionnality. The autoswith to the pathbar would be done by typing the start characters of a path: "/", "~/", "." or the usual keyboard shortcut ctrl+l ctrl+f
