does the wifi card work at all?

linux-restricted-modules installed.

wifi works out of the box, bios does not spec led for wifi light.

Is this wireless card an ipw2200? Check the output of `lsmod | grep ipw2200`

If so, see the solution at bug 21367.

this worked

Wifi Status LED can be made to work easily by editing /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200.
i.e. 'sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200' add the following text to it, save,
and after your next reboot you will have a functioning blue LED. 'options
ipw2200 led=1'

thanks for the tip andrew :)
