Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When compiz starts, it uses about 50mb of ram, but that amount increases over time. I left it running for 8 hours, and the memory usage was 1,6 gigabytes.
How to reproduce:
1. Start compiz
2. leave it running for a longer period of time
It will use about 50mb of memory at start, the usage will grow over time. After 15 minutes it will use 100mb.

A possible related problem is bug 779185 where one of Unity's components is slowly leaking out RAM as well.

Today I have Compiz running at 1.2 GB. It appears to happen when I am using Movie Player.

Confirmed. On default settings it behaves properly. Memory leak starts when I disable Grid or enable window preview if this is of any help. At 8h uptime memory usage reaches 1GB and unity gets restarted all time by itself.

There is a theory that indicator-multiload causes this. Please post here if you use indicator-multiload

I have never used that indicator on the two machines that deal with the
problem. That sounds like a red herring.

It was confirmed that indicator-multiload causes memory leak in compiz
see bug #779717.
They have a version of unity in their ppa that is patched to work with indicator-multiload.
Looks like this is unity bug.

I'm not running indicator-multiload here, but I also have high memory usage over time.

It does have a time of 208:52.35, but it just keeps getting higher.

Comment #12 indicates fix is available, although I can't reproduce here. Gonna mark as invalid for Unity, as its confirmed in Compiz (Buntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on the current 11.10 release. If you are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug still exists by testing a livecd (available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/). Please keep in mind that the development version (12.04) is not suitable for daily use - please only use it for testing purposes.

Thank you for your help and patience.
