Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Hello,
I am trying to add my GMail address book with all its contacts to Evolution. All I get is this Error-Message:

"
Unable to open address book
This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI was entered, or the server is unreachable.
Detailed error message: Cannot authenticate user: Invalid query
"

I'm aware of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/720434 , but there it is said that the bug is fixed and a new one should be opened.

It's different from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-data-server/+bug/755043 , because I have only about 200 contacts and I don't get a single one.
Also, the Error message is not "timeout", but "Cannot authenticate user: Invalid query"

Actually, if you start from a fresh install, and then try to add your contacts, you get exactly this. In evolution 2.32 and 3.0. Check out this screenshot showing what I expect is exactly what you are describing.

This is why I changed the name of the bug.

summary: - Google Contacts timeout while loading in Evolution
+ Unable to open addressbook error when loading Google Contacts

Try switching between local contacts and your newly setup Google contacts a few times accepting error messages; Eventually you will probably see three different messages, either the one above here, or this one

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/68733604/evolution_gui_matching_debug.png

Or this one

All taken by myself with this issue. Sometimes you see "some" contacts, sometimes "none"

This is not a Duplicate of the other bug which stops the import of data from google-contacts when a user defined field is empty....this is not the case here as described above....

The case here is that the login fails with the error message:

Detailed error message: Cannot authenticate user: Invalid query

We know that the login password is OK because if you enter an incorrect password it simply does not even try to get data from the google-contacts but when the password is correct the above message appears and no contacts at all are imported!

I have changed to Thunderbird because of this!

Although the handling of blank custom contact fields is fixed in upcoming 11.10, I have seen this message also with legit authentication issues. In these other less frequent case you should ensure your client is not locked out using https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha. This happens per client (so other devices continue to work fine) when Google suspects any sort of network issue.

Be sure to post back if this solves your issue as captcha handling should be prioritized upstream IMHO.
