This bug affects me too, but it has nothing to do with libreoffice from what I can tell. I get it while in Unity just using it, or even using the classic desktop. I am using 11.04. I don't recall this problem in earlier versions. It is rather announcing. It's tanking my productivity since I have to reboot to fix it.

You don't have to reboot.
I checked that when I open document in LibreOffice buttons disappear, but when You close the document (not the LibreOffice, just the document) and You open it again (or any other document) the buttons will be back again. After this, every time when You open or close the document but not the program itself, then the buttons will stay.
