After some time of using Cairo-dock after the upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 I have issues that freeze my screen.
I have had several times a complete hang of my PC.
In some cases I could ctrl+alt+f1 to get to a terminal.
Top showed compiz running at 100% cpu.
It seems to be a cairo/compiz issue.
Perhaps this is related to the changes for Unity in Ubuntu?

I experienced this in both the classic login and the unity login.

Similar issues are described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo-dock/+bug/509419

I am not sure what else to rapport, I have been unable to make a decent apport.
Please post if you need more info

Hello,
Thank you for this bug report.

If 'Top' showed compiz running at 100% cpu, I guess it's a bug with Compiz and not Cairo-Dock.
When you click on a launcher, Cairo-Dock sends a request to X in order to display the windows or to minimise it, etc.. Then Compiz detects the request and animates the windows, changes the desktop (with animations, etc.). So I guess this bug is due to Compiz and not linked to Cairo-Dock because there is no direct link between them (except with a few applets like Switcher, ShowDesktop or when you put together in a subdock all applications with the same class).
But don't hesitate to change the status if I'm wrong ;)

Changed in cairo-dock (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Matthieu Baerts (matttbe)
status: New → Invalid

thank you for your quick reply.
I thought this was Cairo related, since I only had it when running Cairo in 11.04.
The evolution launcher I created still acts strange, there is no ball under it.
I will try to get this issue again.
I updated today and saw unity updates, maybe there are fixes in it.

I posted the bug to try and get help in identifying it, if you think it is a compiz bug, I will try that.
Thanks!

Don't hesitate to use metacity (instead of Compiz) in order to check if there is something wrong in Cairo-Dock.
But if you switched from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, you switched from Compiz 0.8 to 0.9 too (Compiz has been completely rewrited in C++...)

Indeed I become to think this is a compiz bug.
I have had no issue for some time now running on a non-accelerated desktop.
Can you please explain how to use metacity?
It seems to be installed both.

If the bug is indeed in compiz, it is one of the most annoying ever: my pc freezes and I have to hard reset.
Is there anything I can do to provide more info?

I guess Metacity is your "non-accelerated desktop", also called "Ubuntu without any effects"
(But you can also launch this command from the Alt+F2 menu: metacity --replace)

Yes I think you can upload some info by using this command launched from a terminal:
    $ apport-collect 776204

I managed to get metacity working and enabled compositing, thank you.
I removed compiz, so the command does not work.
If I reinstall it, should it be running when the command is issued?
Thank you!
