adobereader-deu shows empty menus with unity-2d

Using the unity-2d login, I would expect to see the general menu options along the top of the screen and they would drop down with full menu items. Instead, the top menu does show, but when I choose any one of the menu items (for example File) the drop down menu is very narrow and is without any text. It looks like the drop down menu has the right number of options, but there is no way to know what one is choosing without the text.
