Bug Description

Kubuntu Natty 11.04 freezes at the beginning of the installation (when "kubuntu" is shown on a blue screen just before the graphical options should be shown either to try it or to install it) on the HP Pavilion dv6-3105er laptop when trying to install from desktop CD (both amd64 and i386 versions were tried).

If Alternate CD is used (amd64 version was tried) then the installation goes perfectly without any errors. However, Kubuntu is not bootable afterwards: it freezes before graphical login. If booting in rescue mode is selected, then it freezes after the following line is shown: [drm] Initialized radeon 2.8.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 1

MD5 sums of all used installation CDs were checked and they all were checked for errors before trying the installations - there were no problems here.

Also, there was Kubuntu Maverick 10.10 previously successfully installed and working reasonably well on this HP Pavilion dv6-3105er laptop (with the major exception of limited video card usability: only simple integrated Radeon HD 4250 was working while advanced discrete Radeon HD 5650 was not).

This bug is probably related to the bug #727620 [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics).

Do any of the workarounds on the bug you linked fix the issue?

Hello, IKT. Unfortunately, I cannot check whether these workarounds work since I do not have access to this laptop anymore (I am far from it now) and do not know exactly when I will have the access. If I can help with this bug in some other way - please let me know and I will try to help. Thanks.

We have a HP Pavilion dv6 at work, with a Wubi-installation of Kubuntu on it. When I performed an ordinary upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 it broke. Now it will not boot. It halts and the keyboard does not work.

Finally I removed the installation and tried to install 11.04 via Wubi from scratch. The in-Windows part of the installation works well, but when the second part after booting Kubuntu for the first time commences, it halts to a complete stop.

Every time I reboot, Kubuntu tries to complete the installation, but it halts at the same place. I pressed [ESC] to see the messages during boot, and you find what I see in the attached log file (copied by hand).

When Kubuntu reaches this stage, I have to use the physical power button to turn the laptop off. The messages on screen differs slightly from time to time, but it always crashes at the same point.

I hope this is a help for anyone...
