Impossible to change the pointer

1. Open Appearance Preference
2. Choose a theme and click "customize"
3. Select pointer tab
4 Choose a pointer
5 Pointer doesn't change

Possible workaround
1. Open the Terminal and write: sudo gedit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
2. Paste in the file:

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Name_pointer

3. Reboot

Hi, it is nessisary to quit the "customize theme" dialog, and the appearance window, then your pointer will be applied. Will mark as a confirmed low priority bug.

Just closing the window and changing the "[Icon Theme] Inherits=Name_pointer" does not help. Resizing the cursor, as shown in the out-4.ogv by Paolo shows that simply quitting the "Customize" dialog doesn't do anything to refresh the cursor. Also, rebooting doesn't seem to help, either (i.e. the workaround does not work in all circumstances).

The user interface for theme customization is no longer available in Ubuntu so this bug no longer applies.
