Only partial unmounting during shutdown.

I have a file system with two hd and several partitions mounted separately locally

root, /home, /usr, /var, /local/share , /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder, /backup are on separate partitions. all ext3.
These are all listed in fstab and mounted during booting.

During unmounting the message "unmounting local file system" does not appear any further and when booting again all partitions but the rootpartion have to reload the journal, which indicates unproper unmounting. The rootpartion and /usr are on sda, the others on sdb or further usb-mounted devices. the only partition unmounted w/o problem seems to be the rootpartition on sda4.

edit: the root partition is not unmounted, too. As I could find some entry in dmesg which showed that root was also recovered.

For testing: before shutdown I unmounted /usr/local/share and /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder by hand. After shutdown these two partitions did not need to recover the journal, the others had to.

I expect the file system to unmount properly and to be mounted cleanly without the need to wait for recovering the journals.

The problem also shows up on the console using "init 0": for years I could see "unmounting local filesystem", now nothing.

Hi,

since this is looks like a nasty, fundamental problem, I am very much disappointed that there has been any reaction within three months. The problem has not gone away in the meantime and I wonder whether there will be any help to correct the problem.

Given the fact that the lack of proper unmounting sometimes leads to disk errors, I am quite convinced that the problem I report is of the category "serious" or "data loss programmed".

It looks that I should change the distribution and go back to debian even if that means that I will miss some multimedia stuff.

I have now Ubuntu 11.10 installed. Fresh install, partions /, /usr, /var freshly formatted and the system could umount. However, after installing the uptodate updates, the same behaviour as before.

I am now down to run from tty1 init 1 several times and umount -a till the filesystems are umounted. I am willing to provide more information if necessary. IMHO the /etc/rc.0/S0umountfs script as the link to /etc/init.d/umountsf is never reached. This seems apparent from the fact that the message "will now umount all file systems" cannot be detected.

Since a re-install of ubuntu 11.10 one week ago an actual system does no longer reproduce the bug: partitions are unmounted cleanly and can be mounted without recovering.

for me, this bug could be closed since I am not able to reproduce it.

I have similar problem after updating to 12.04. My root partition needs recovery after every reboot.

I can confirm this bug affects both my laptop and desktop - I get multiple "cannot unmount, partition is busy" messages during shutdown, and then my /boot partition needs recovery every time.
