Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Running Ubuntu 11.04 from a live-CD, I tried to play an mp3 file with Banshee. When a message popped up saying that an mp3 module needed to be downloaded, I agreed, but then it couldn't find the module (networking was already working at the time). Later attempts to play mp3 files failed silently; ogg files play fine.

So there are two problems to be fixed:
1) Make sure that the mp3 module can be found
2) If mp3 module can't be found, make sure that user is prompted later to download it again

I'm using the 64 bit live-CD, if that is relevant.

as far as I can remember this behaviour it's intentional because there are some issues with copyrights in some countries so I really don't think it's a banshee fault

Agreed. Did you remember to enable the multiverse repositories?
(This can be done by ticking the "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues" box in the "Software sources" dialog. [This dialog can in turn be found by starting the software centre, and hitting Edit->Software sources.])

I did not enable the multiverse repositories (and didn't know about them (and if I had known about them, I might not have known that mp3 support needs them)).

I think it might be nice if the user initially would be alerted about the issue somehow, and if the subsequent silent fails on playing mp3's could get a warning.
