Bug Description

Binary package hint: pango-graphite

Installing pango-graphite causes gdm and applications using it unusable. Symptoms:

1. Login window (gdm), namely toolbar at the bottom (showing the time) and user selector do not show up. The background is visible, however; the "drum" sound is also audible. The mouse pointer is visible. After that, no interaction is perceivable. The only solution is to switch to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1).

2. The first symptom was an unusable authentication window during screensave; namely, none showed up. The mouse pointer was visible and interacted normally, but otherwise, the authentication "window" doesn't show up.

The only solution to this problem was removing the pango-graphite package.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, we think the bug has been fixed in a later version of Ubuntu - Maverick Meerkat.
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pango-graphite/+bug/540035 and the links back to the upload in Debian, etc. for more info.

Please, if possible, test this in a later version of Ubuntu and see if the issue still remains, and report back here.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please follow the instructions for "How to request new packages" at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#request-new-packages

I do no think that it is a small enough change to simply SRU (although I thought so before {cf. my last comments on above bug}). https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

It may even be appropriate to completely remove the Lucid version of the package from the archives as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/PackageArchive#Removing_Packages
