Bug Description

Binary package hint: k9copy

"dvd is not opened" message pops up when I try to copy to ISO image or to other DVD on the fly. Also, the title and menu information is not populated in the window.

I can play any DVD just fine using Kaffeine.

I have the DVD to copy in my dvd reader drive, and a blank DVD-R in my dvd writer drive. If I put the DVD to copy in my dvd writer drive and try to rip an ISO, i get the same result.

This is the command line output when starting k9copy:

find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/003: Permission denied
find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/002: Permission denied
find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/001: Permission denied
find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/003: Permission denied
find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/002: Permission denied
find: /dev/bus/usb/.usbfs/001: Permission denied

There is no command line output when trying to copy.

If I run as root, I get a different output on starting k9copy:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

kdeinit: Can't connect to the X Server.
kdeinit: Might not terminate at end of session.
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

kded: cannot connect to X server :0.0
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-20660' to 'kded'
kded: ERROR: Communication problem with kded, it probably crashed.

When running as root, if I try clicking "copy DVD", i get this:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

knotify: cannot connect to X server :0.0
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Registering failed!
ERROR: Communication problem with knotify, it probably crashed.

Whether I run as root user or normal user, whenever I click "copy DVD", i get this message from the gui: "dvd is not opened", and no title or menu information is populated.

I think you just need to perform File -> Open... (press Ctrl-O) action in order to read DVD layout.
You should run k9copy as normal user and not as root.

Google brought me here because I, too, was looking for the cause of the "dvd is not opened" message. I followed Luka's suggestion to perform an "open" first and now I'm all set. I suspect dogen's error messages are benign (I also got the usbfs messages) and that he slipped up with k9copy's interface.

Same as Tyler, Google brought me here. The real bug is that the error message is wrong. It is a bug and it should be corrected. It should say: open the disk first. When you are trying to rip a copyrighted material, the first thought is: where is the dvdlib?

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?

Luca,

What's the status on your progress?

Steve, I think this is not a bug, but just the way k9copy works: it needs you to manually open DVD first. I would suggest to close it as invalid, as no response from reporter.

Please Luka, don't close it as invalid. There is an error here, it happens to everyone who starts using k9copy for the first time: the program says "DVD is not opened" and we start to wander what happens. Another way is to disable the controls that report the error until the dvd is "opened". In fact, it really means that k9copy needs and initial reading of the dvd.

It's probably a feature. But to a beginner, it's a bug ... It got me too ...
