The blog entry http://leo.gaggl.com/2011/04/googleapps-gmail-as-default-ubuntu-mail-client/ describes how to add a messaging entry for GNOME Gmail to the Unity messaging indicator menu.

gnome-gmail 1.7.2-1ubuntu3, in ppa:daves/daves (https://launchpad.net/~daves/+archive/daves), has a fix for this, as well as #729357.
