Bug Description

Binary package hint: ncpfs

- Kernel Version
2.6.38-8-generic

- Ubuntu Version
Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04

ncpfs:
  Installed: 2.2.6-8
  Candidate: 2.2.6-8

In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I used ncpmount to access my company's Novell-NetWare-Shares. That worked very well. Today I updated to 11.04 (Natty) and the whole mountpoint seems to be stuck.
When I cd to the mount point and try to list my files with ls, the console hangs (Strg-C does not help, waiting does not help). Once the bug even managed to kill my whole system and I had to reboot.
Opening the mounts in Nautilus results in an empty window, not responding any more.

I tried to reinstall the ncp packages and to manually remount the shares - nothing helped.

I hope very much, this problem will be solved soon. Do you have any hints what I could be doing wrong?

Hi,

I have the same problem.

Using nautilus, i get an empty windows and sometimes (quite always) a black screen with messages, as when login without GUI. To recover graphic screen, I have to do ctrl-alt F1 and ctrl-alt F7

Have a nice day...

Thanks, that sounds very promising.
I suppose you mean this kernel-PPA:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.39-rc4-natty/

One Question before I install a kernel that is not officially released:
How can I revert to my current (2.6.38-8-generic) kernel in case the 2.6.39 does not work (e.g. my system refuses to boot that kernel, or there are other severe side effects?

Finally - Thanks again BeaconRus. I risked an update to 2.6.39 via PPA and everything works again.

I used these instructions to plugin the kernel-ppa into my natty:
http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/37

"To install this PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install <package name>
"

I updated to 2.6.39, too:

> novell_ubuntu$ uname -r
2.6.39-0-generic

At first the machine did not boot. After a "repair packages" in recovery mode, the machine worked normally, apart from ncp. Nautilus/Console show the content of the network folders at first. After less than five actions within the folder, nautilus/console hangs.

Any ideas?

Michael

Kernel 2.6.39-0-generic not work with Ati driver fglrx.

After a "repair packages" use kernel 2.6.39 or 2.6.38?

I will try the 2.6.39 with the nvidia-driver running. Might nvidia be a problem, too? I will use the nv driver and try it once again.

Hi BeaconRus,

now that I got a little bit deeper into the whole kernel-thing, I got your question: After the repair packages I used the 2.6.39-0-generic

~$ uname -r
2.6.39-0-generic

But it still does not work.

Hi guys,

for me, the following combination worked:

- Kernel 2.6.39-0
- ncpfs 2.2.6-4
- Filemanager PCman instead of Nautilus (http://suckup.de/blog/2010/01/31/nautilus-durch-pcman-file-manager-ersetzen/)

regards

Michael

After upgrading to Kernel 2.6.39, I can connect to the novell file system. However, the file system is very slow. just listing a directory (in terminal or in nautilus) takes tens of seconds.

The kernel ppa does not seem to have any packages in it at this time. I could not upgrade.

This is a SERIOUS bug for any business user that must work with a Novell network. This currently affects me exactly as described by the other reporters. I would just like to point out here, and I will on the original bug as well, that the importance should be elevated. This is a CRITICAL interoperability issue.
