Bug Description

I just upgraded from Maverick to Natty, and noticed that my laptop was running hotter than usual. I ran 'top', and watched the cpu usage around 20% usage, mostly the processes 'compiz' and 'Xorg' at 9% and 7% and 'thunderbird' at about 4%. I started closing other applications watching for a change, and when I closed Thunderbird the CPU usage dropped to about 6% at idle, with 'compiz' and 'Xorg' and about 2% each.

It doesn't seem to do the same thing with Firefox, so possibly not an XUL problem.

Could be the caused by the size of the icon of thunderbird maybe, though I have just to test this. a similar thing happens with Clementine but worse.

icon size would be spiking memory usage possibly, but shouldn't really affect cpu.

Hi! I just noticed the same effect after a fresh ubuntu 12.04 installation. It was probably also the case with my previous ubuntu 11.10. In my case, compiz increases from less than 10 to above 70 % when I start thunderbird. Xorg is affected to a lesser extent.
