thank you for your bug report, it seems like the compiz decorator is going away, could you take a screenshot before the issue? did you tweak your decorator in some way? the ubuntu configuration has no icon or logo in the left corner but a close button

Mr. Sebastien,

As requested,i have attached a screen shot that was missed.

I did tweak few settings in compiz manager but which module is causing the issue i am unsure.

Yes a close button is the one, but ref to my screen shots, the windows are in unmaximized state, and and also refer to the position of my mouse pointer, its on the tomboy notes icon.

If u need any more details or reports/ pls pass me the cli commands so that i can get the required dump for you to look at.

thanks.

seems the decorator is crashing, could you follow http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash or enable apport to get a stracktrace of unity-window-decorator?

Hi,
I guess the problem is because you're using gtk-window-decorator and not unity-window-decorator. Could you check if pressing Alt+f2 then typing unity --reset and pressing enter, fixes the issue?

Your suggestion has fixed the issue. but afterwards the top bar got corrupted. has to reboot.

I've had a similar problem. After uninstalling emerald (sudo apt-get remove emerald) everything is back to normal again.
Seems like emerald and unity-window-decorator are not a good match. Not sure if the OP also has emerald installed, but for me this was the solution.

apperently, as I read in a duplicate bug, the compiz-decorator crashes. I'm running a default install and for my ALT-F2: compiz-decorator solved the issue

My experience is more like that mentioned in Bug #772184 . - That is trying different application switchers seems to start/cause the problem.

The installation I have is an upgrade of 10.10 and I had in that version played witht the decorator settings, but not after upgrading.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 with the classic desktop (gnome/compiz) and am experiencing this same bug. gtk-window-decorator crashes with a segfault whenever I click on the top left window menu icon on any window.

abuchanan@abuchanan-desktop:~$ gtk-window-decorator --replace

** (gtk-window-decorator:4958): CRITICAL **: Could not find frame info \xb0\xa5~\u0001 in frame type table
Segmentation fault

I have attached a strace for the above command.

This appears to be the same bug over at Debian – along with a solution, which is to do with incompatible versions of various pieces of software:

I am experiencing similar issues with 12.04 Unity.
Though I am not sure when/how it occurs, certainly not the 'click top left icon' jig
But I have noticed most of the times after lock/unlock, the windows borders are gone.

I tried 'unity --reset' once but that didn't seem to resolve this.
Please let me know what all information to collect for debugging this and I'll get it done.

It is really painful to logout-then-login to resolve this each time it occurs

To add to my last note, I think it happens generally when I am using 'Lotus Notes with integrated Sametime' and I open a terminal or if someone pings me on Sametime
I noticed many people reported 'windows decoration crash' with different scenarios.
If this is not the right thread to discuss my issue, please redirect me to the correct one

Thanks

Hi all. There have been a few bugs similar to this reported already and fixes for some are going to be released soon.

Mohd, could you please get a stack trace from gtk-window-decorator?

1. env DISPLAY=:0 gdb /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator
2. (gdb) break _exit
3. (gdb) run --sync --replace
4. Trigger the crash.
5. (gdb) bt
6. Copy the output from gdb and paste it here.

Everyone other than Mohd, please do the same but log your results in a NEW BUG:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+filebug
