mouse clicks do not get through anymore

Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

On a completely fresh install of Edgy on a Dell Latitude D620 (with updates), I sometimes see problematic click behaviour, where mouse clicks seem to get "stuck" and they never end up anywhere else anymore. It seems related to notification popups. The mouse pointer does move, and I can still type in the window that has the focus. xev tells me that normally button presses do generate a Press and a Release. When two other applications are opened, I can fix the focus by pressing ALT+TAB, but it repeats itself often enough that it's making working with the mouse on the laptop pretty much unusable.

I will attach some warnings from $HOME/.xession-errors that might or might not be relevant.

metacity-2.16.3-0ubuntu2 is installed.

Oh I forgot to mention that this is the amd64-bit version of Edgy on a Core 2 Duo (SMP) -- maybe a race condition somewhere?

Thank you for your bug. Could you give details about the notification popups and why you think that's due to them? What applications do you use? The messages from the log seem to point to a bugged application

As to why I think it's the notification popups, this is because after a fresh install, after logging in you get an 'updates' notification right away. Most of the time if I was quick I could click a menu before that appeared and that click worked, however after the notification had popped up sometimes I couldn't even dismiss it anymore.

As to the applications that I use, that's the strange thing: I didn't customize anything at all. In fact I wiped ~/.gnome* and ~/.gconf* once (without being logged into X) to make sure that it wasn't a setting crash or something like that. This is a vanilla, totally nothing customized, first time login amd64 Edgy. Strange that I'm the only one seeing this :(

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Also, the issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Indeed, I can't reproduce this with the Gutsy Tribe 4 live CD & subsequent install. It's not an exhaustive test though because no notification bubbles are popping up just after installation (no updates available for testing I guess). Still I'd say this bug is invalid seeing as I'm the only one having ever seen this; I'll reopen if I ever run into it again.
