missing 10-wacom.conf

Bug Description

A fairly recent Lucid update (~3 weeks ago?) inadvertently removed the 10-wacom.conf at /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d on at least some systems. This has the effect of "breaking" a Wacom tablet or tablet PC unless an xorg.conf is being used.

Current "fix" is to manually add a 10-wacom.conf.

This affects xf86-input-wacom 0.10.5 in the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package.

My tablet WAS working, but today it decided to stop working, after xserver-something update.

There is no 10-wacom.conf file in that dir.
xinput gives me

xsetwacom list gives me nothing

and a ls /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d
gives me

So I assume you are right, I have the evdev drivers. Why is it here and why it has changed?

I've been avoiding the update of wacom-dkms and xserver-xorg-input-wacom as it seems that makes my
Wacom Bamboo Pen can't drag through the air after tap. But I updated many other packages some days ago and now I have the same problem.

Mi /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d is the same as the previous user. I tried to install previous versions of that both packages, as that used to fix it, but not anymore.

Hi Favio,

Yes, I just helped a user manually install a 10-wacom.conf a day or two ago to fix his unresponsive Wacom tablet.

Hi Fabio,

I've always assumed this was a packaging bug. The newer upstream xf86-input-wacom versions will try to write a 50-wacom.conf to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d. It's not aware of the Debian/Ubuntu custom location /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d for kernel 2.6.32's hybrid X server 1.7. Maybe an extra rule to direct the 10-wacom.conf to the correct place was inadvertently dropped from the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package? Or if the .conf is packaged with other .conf's in another package it was inadvertently left out?

I don't know what update you are talking about, but the lucid system I can access still have the file in place.

And lucid was the only release that used that path, newer releases ship the snippets in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.

There was a rash of missing 10-wacom.conf's in I guess March 2011? Our speculation at the time was that it was due to an update since several Wacom users reported their tablet stopped working after some sort of xserver update. We never pinned down a culprit update. I waited a few weeks or better before posting this bug report to ensure the issue was persisting.

But okey doke.

I'll just continue showing users whose Wacom tablets aren't "working" due to a lack of a 10-wacom.conf, for whatever mysterious reason, how to install it manually. As I have been doing the last eight months. After all there's less than 18 months to go.

I should have kept a running total. 40-50 by now?

There are no official updates to -wacom for lucid, so you must be using some other package source then.

It is true a number of users reported using DoctorMO's ( Martin Owens) PPA: https://launchpad.net/~doctormo/+archive/wacom-plus and then ending up with a non-functional tablet due to a missing 10-wacom.conf.

I assumed that a update of the PPA shortly after the hypothetical problem update had incorporated the "packaging error". I reasoned it couldn't be the PPA responsible for the missing configuration file because the majority of users reported only having installed vanilla Lucid plus official updates. I recall looking at the PPA at the time and not spotting a problem there either.

And yes, it has been a long, long time since I installed the default Lucid xf86-input-wacom-0.10.5. It is just so early in xf86-input-wacom development. And as you know the 0.10.x tree was for code reorganization and not really intended for users. The 0.11.x tree was originally the series intended for widespread user use/testing.

Hi, I just wanted to say this just happened to me as well (and thanks Favux as your posts on UbuntuForums allowed me to fix it). My tablet worked on the first day after adding the PPA. xserver was only updated (or downloaded at all?) at the next boot and everything had been working as intended. Then today (first reboot after the update), I lost the ability to use the stylus after tapping the pad until I moved it out of range and brought it back. Both buttons were also completely inactive.

10-wacom.conf was indeed missing so I created one with the suggested code and now it works again.

Looking at my sources, it seems I have Doctor Mo's PPA as well. Got the link from Ubuntu's French doc at http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/wacom_bamboo_pen (2nd method). But since it worked perfectly until xserver got added, I'd be tempted to place the fault on the latter.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and a Bamboo Pen. Let me know if I can help and thanks a million for your work. Hopefully this will help my wrist pain.
