Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

1) version
Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04

2) package versions
unity:
  Installed: 3.8.10-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 3.8.10-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 3.8.10-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) expected to happen
after enabling wobbly-windows in ccsm expected the plugin to become enabled

4) happened instead
menu panel went completely transparent and all icons disappeared except for the Skype one, disabling the plugin afterwards made the panel black and did not bring back any icons. I don't think restarting GDM helps, I had to blitz a couple of gnome folders under ~ to get back the panel on a default desktop.

For me the same thing happens also when activating other Compiz plugins in ccsm. After restart the plugin that I tried to enable works find. I'm not sure, maybe this bug is a duplicate of #685552.

After logging out and restarting GDM when I logged back in the plug in was working and the panel was available again.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Same here as Chirstof. The top panel disappears when activating or deactivating plugins. Not all of them, but especially those related to window effects and window management.

@Alex and @Seb:

I'm having the same problem and the instructions do not apply because Compiz does not crash.

Save from the panel disappearing, it keeps running normally. In fact, it's not even that the panel disappears, it's just rendered incorrectly: sometimes I get a black bar, sometimes a bar with fake transparency and sometimes artifacts. But in all cases I can click blindly on it and confirm that the indicators and notification area are still there.
