Binary package hint: yelp

clicking on the icon of internal hard disk does not launch the dialogue box for keying in the password to mount the system.

Which icon exactly? Is this the one you get inside the file browser in the 'File System' tab?
Is the hard disk partition encrypted in any way? Is this a separate hard disk/partition from the one you are booting from?

Everywhere the icon is found: on the panel, filesystem browser.
these are separate hard disks from the boot/startup hard disk.

mounting the disks using the terminal also failed.

Hi,
  Hmm ok - if it also fails to mount them from the terminal then something other than nautilus is failing; can you show
the command that you are using to mount them from the terminal and the way it fails, and also the output of

sudo udisks --dump
