Bug Description

If someone answers my question, I should get an email. Otherwise how will I know? If someone PMs me and I've not visited the site lately, how do I know to read it? If someone relies to a comment I made on a Journal entry, how do I know to read it and possibly respond?

Right now, a lot of actions on the site are one-stop ordeals. Providing email alerts would draw people back to the site, greatly increasing user interaction (and ad revenue!).

We've decided that mails could put too much load on the site, so for time being we will not fix this.

What about using the site's internal messaging system?

Ok, I have implemented a system so now users can select to get notifications from answers to their questions via private message. :)

Ah, got it. within the Answers. Is there also a way to do pre-define a default value (e.g. in general I want to receive notifications for all questions I have opened, and maybe even for replyies to existing questions)

I've reopened this bug. I'd like to reconsider sending email alerts. Drupal is built to handle such alerts, and with "only" a few thousand users and single-recipient emails, it won't slow things down. To keep a bit of load off the server, we could always make it an option (like the RabbitBot notifications are now).

It'll bring people back a lot more. Specifically: answers to questions, comments on questions, replies to the user's comments, and PMs.

It'd be different if every user of the site was emailed each time a comment or answer was made, but since in this case it'd be one recipient, it's definitely worth it.

I've gotten a few more requests for this via PM and IRC. It's something people expect to be there. :)

Looking forward to this feature coming. To avoid overloading the server, you'll could try implementing a subscription service to each message/answers. That way, if a user doesn't want to be notified about a certain message, they could always turn it off or have it send the notification daily/weekly/monthly.
