Libextractor is not found

With 5.0.1 and trunk (518) it doesn't find libextractor upon scanning. An strace shows that it searches the lib paths for libextractor.so.1.1.1.
The system libextractor is 0.6.2 which has the libextractor.so.3.0.2.

What distro are you using? Basenji is not compatible with libextractor 0.6, it supports 0.5 only.
However, libextractor will be dropped in favor of taglib in the next release anyway.
There's a branch already, you could try lp:~pulb/basenji/basenji-taglib and see if it works for you.

I am using Archlinux which has libextractor-0.6. Maybe the line in the README "libextractor1c2a (0.5.21 or later)" should be updated to reflect the incompatibility?

The taglib branch works and does extract metadata, I created an AUR package for the branch (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=48326).
It doesn't extract and store thumbnails, but maybe this is still in development?

The taglib branch is considered pretty stable and thumbnail creation is working on my ubuntu system.
Did you check if thumbnail creation is enabled in the preferences? Do you get warnings if you run basenji in a terminal?

The thumbnail generation is enabled, there are no error messages.

I also updated to 520 but it still doesn't generate the thumbnail. If it is of any relevance, I am using the Gnome 3 shell and the thumbnails are present in nautilus.

Yes, this of relevance, Basenji uses the same thumbnail code as nautilus does. Maybe this is a regression in GNOME 3, I plan to upgrade my system to GNOME 3 soon, hopefully I can reproduce the problem then.

I just tested it on my ubuntu gnome 3 test system (which I upgraded from gnome 2) and thumbnailing is working there.
Did you upgrade from gnome 2 too? If not, there may be a gnome 2 dependency missing.
Please open a new bug report for the thumbnail issue on gnome 3, I mark this report as "in progress" now as the original extractor problem will be resolved in one the next releases which will use taglib.
