tried to manually fix using apt-get -f ttf-fonts..... from gnome-terminal and that produces a eula that hangs waiting for an [OK] response ... I don't know how to fix the borked install dataase any other way now...

Managed to convince synaptic (rather than ubuntu software centre) to ugrade the ttf fonts which gave a working graphics eula tickbox screen.... Looks like my big woes are done with for now.

But it looks like there is a lurking problem with the user responses working in a terminal - I've no idea where to file that as a separate bug report.
