Bug Description

compiz doesn't allow to start the Ubuntu default session properly. The gnome main bar crashes after some seconds and even unity doesn't start completely freezing all the session. This forces to restart gdm. With the nouveau open source nvidia drivers all works properly. If I run "compiz --replace" in a session without any effect, it crashes at "Starting unity-window-decorator"

You said the gnome main panel crashes. Are you referring to the Gnome Desktop? Can you run the Gnome desktop instead of Unity or is it also crashing?

Yes, I'm referring to the gnome desktop. To be precise, all the session freezes and gdm has to be restarted. I can't run the classic Ubuntu desktop (with effects). I can run the one without any effect but if I run compiz in that session, that session freezes as well.

I have a desktop system NVidia Geforce 6600. After properly updating it today, Unity runs fine on it.
You have a Geforce 7500, so I don't think your issue is graphics related.

Make sure you have properly update your system and that you don't have conflicting libraries.

@Lorenzo

I meant conflicting libraries between the nouveau driver and the Nvidia proprietary driver.

No, there aren't. I completely removed the nouveau driver.

Same issue on same Dell as Jörgen (Dell Precision M65/Quadro FX 350M). This system was working well until 10.10 until I upgraded to 11.04.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
