run as root never resolves

in edgy ept

for app that calls up kdesu (adept package manager, system settings' admin mode, etc) password is asked for, password is accepted (incorrect password error not shown) but app never opens. adept notifier and update try to open (appear in kicker) for 30 sec but disappear. was not a problem for about 3-4 logins after install until now. problem still apparent after multiple new sessions, restarts, shutdowns.

dualbooted machine with intel centrino duo

no other problems seen other than long startup if wireless radio on (unusable wireless card)
and really long restart
