I think this is a problem with python-central, not python-packagekit.
What is the output of "python -V"?

Hi Matthius,

I do not know what the out put of python is or even where to find out
sorry.

The software keeps asking to report it so I did.

I have also noticed if I download any software from the software centre
it also comes up saying it failed to install - but when I try it, all is
working fine.

regards
Neil

Thanks for reporting this bug Neil, I think it will be fixed soon. I *guess* this bug happens because you have installed two conflicting Python versions.
If you're familiar with Synaptic package manager or aptitude, search for python and check which Python versions you have installed. Remove all old versions of Python. (I don't know Lucid's default version...)
I repackaged PackageKit completely, so installing a new version of the PackageKit packaging or upgrading to Natty or Maverick should fix this too. (Although this might not be an option for you...)

Changed in packagekit (Ubuntu):
