Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-amd64-generic
Couldn't see CD-ROM because Intel DG965WH motherboard uses Marvell PATA, which 2.6.19-7-generic x86_64 doesn't support.
Support for Marvell PATA was added to upstream linux kernel in 2.6.19.
Kernel needs building with "Marvell PATA" configured under the new libata settings. Or so it says in a recent kernel mailing list thread with the subject "IDE support on Intel DG965SS".
Reading around various lists and forums for various distros, this problem seems to be affecting many boards with the G965 chipset and which use either Marvell or JMicron PATA.

Sorry, my package hint is wrong. It's the kernel first booted on the installation CD that has this problem, not the kernel that subsequently gets installed.
