Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

On first login, my pointing devices (laptop touchpad and apple magic pad when I enable bluetooth) are disabled. I need to use the keyboard to launch "Pointing devices" and then tab to the "Disable touchpad" option - check and then uncheck it and my devices work again. Note, the "Disable touchpad" checkbox is *not* checked when the devices are first disabled.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with the dialog you're referring to. How did you get to it? I checked the Mouse dialog but there is no "Disable touchpad" checkbox option.

Does this happen every time you log in, or did it occur just the one time?

You mentioned having bluetooth enabled. Does it not occur when bluetooth is not enabled?

It happens every time I log in. The "Pointing devices" application (gpointing-device-settings 1.5.1-4) is something I installed from the software centre as it enables management of multiple devices - the default 'Mouse' application only manages the default. This happens on every log in, regardless of bluetooth status. When first connected, the magic trackpad is also disabled until I do the same dance. The mouse does work in the gdm log in screen but stops working when my desktop session starts.

Turns out that removing "Pointing devices" solved the problem and re-installing it caused the problem again so re-assigning to gpointing-device-settings

I have the same problem.
The problem appeared in the ubuntu 10.10 but when I typed "Alt + TAB" or "Alt + F1", for example, the touchpad back to work. I reinstall the Ubuntu 10.10 some times and the problem continued. After update to 11.04, "Alt + TAB" or "Alt + F1" don't work more, I have that check and uncheck "Disable Pointing" in gpointing-device-settings for back to work.

I'm sorry for my english.

Any fix? I'm a little disappointed with Ubuntu in the last two versions.

This package has been removed from the Ubuntu development release, so I am closing all remaining open bug reports.

Sorry that we couldn't fix your problem properly, but gpointing-device-settings is dead upstream, buggy and completely unmaintained.

For more information, see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=870961

Thank you for your understanding and please continue to report any bugs you may find.
