Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When I login, i can see my desktop, icons and the unity panel as expected.
But after a few seconds the screen stops updating.
I can move my cursor and click on windows and the cursor changes to the dragging icon.
But the whole screen just stands still. When I kill compiz by console, everything updates again and
I can see the changes I made while the screen was frozen.

Here are some error messages I get from compiz:
(<unknown>:10582): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid cast from `BamfWindow' to `BamfApplication'
** (<unknown>:10582): CRITICAL **: bamf_application_get_desktop_file: assertion `BAMF_IS_APPLICATION (application)' failed

(<unknown>:10582): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_bus_own_name: assertion `g_dbus_is_name (name) && !g_dbus_is_unique_name (name)' failed

(<unknown>:10582): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_bus_watch_name: assertion `g_dbus_is_name (name)' failed

I've got a similar trouble in a particular case:
- wait until the monitor is going to sleep
- move the mouse before gnome-screensaver lock the session
- wait that the monitor display an image
=> See that the image is the same that before the monitor went to sleep. The cursor move but it is a "selection" cursor, whatever the part of the screen it is over
- go to first console, log in
- kill -9 `pidof compiz`
- go to X console
- see the screen (unity and windows) being redrawn
=> The desktop can be use normally

I'm running natty on an Intel graphic card.

This is not easily reproducible (about once of ten tries)

To complete my previous comment #2, I got an other case when I wait gnome to lock the screen:
- wait until the monitor is going to sleep
- wait some extra time that gnome-screensaver lock the session
- move the mouse
- wait that the monitor display an image
=> See that the image is the same that before the monitor went to sleep. The cursor can move but the entire desktop looks like a wallpaper
- go to first console, log in
- kill -9 `pidof compiz`
- go to X console
- see gnome lock screen being redrawn
=> The desktop can be use normally (after unlocking gnome session)

Unfortunately fixing bug #771391 doesn't solve this bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on your current version. If you are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug still exists by testing a livecd (available at ubuntu.com). When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. If you are unable to test the development version, please let us know if you are able to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 11.10.

Thank you for your help and patience.
