I have the same problem on a Dell Precision M65 with nVidia Corporation G72GL [Quadro FX 350M] (rev a1) graphics card.
I've had this problem since Beta 1 and still after the upgrade to Beta 2 with nvidia-current-270.41.03.

How can I help triage this problem?

thank you for your bug report, does selecting classic gnome in the session list work? do you get the issue using nouveau rather than the nvidia driver?

Both Unity and Gnome Classic fails.
However, Unity-2D and Gnome Classic (no effects) works.
So I guess it is compiz related somehow.

Haven't tried nouveau yet.

reassigning to compiz but it might be an nvidia driver bug

affects: gdm (Ubuntu) → compiz (Ubuntu)

It sort of works with nouveau, the left bar in unity (launcher bar) doesn't hide it

I've now tried the nouveau driver and it works. That is, I can see the launcher bar and the top bar.
However the launcher bar doesn't hide correctly, but could be unrelated to this "bug".

Installed a newer image (20110425), issue is not longer present.
