Modem silent

On building with Fedor Isakov's patch, bug 53014, I installed the resulting package sl-modem-modules-2.6.17-10-generic_2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1+2.6.17-10.33_i386.deb with no apparent problem.

But the modem remains silent. In Dapper, my modem made noises.

According to modem/README.Debian, the speaker does not work (and is unsupported) when the package is built with ALSA support (which appears to be the case, judging from your buildlog posted in bug 53014).

For speaker support, use the proprietary binaries. Remove SUPPORT_ALSA=1 from debian/rules, and rebuild.

The patch plus removal of "SUPPORT_ALSA=1" did the trick, my modem makes noises again. Thank you.

  PPA (https://launchpad.net/~aelmahmoudy/+archive), also fixed an FTBFS

jaunty has the newer version of sl-modem, marking as fix released...
feel free to mark as "new" again if the issue is still present
