Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

In Natty, metacity performs much, much worse than in Maverick. I see a drop in framerates with games run in wine and of about 50%, and glxgears reports less than 1000 fps compared to 9000 fps in Maverick. (glxgears under compiz in Natty reports an excellent framerate of around 3500, but the gears actually only appear to turn once or twice a second.)

It is of significance because running games under compiz in Natty doesn't provide better frame rates than in Maverick.

This is on a Dell XPS 15 with an nvidia 8600 graphics card and running the nvidia 270.30 drivers.

I also have this problem with NVIDIA hardware, in Natty with the latest driver nvidia 270.41.06.

I'm seeing the same problem with NVIDIA hardware and NVIDIA drivers.

Even in "Classic No Effects" mode Metacity is causing significant performance problems with OpenGL applications. Confirmed by switching between OpenBox and Metacity.

This appears to be fixed for me when using the current version of Metacity (2.34).

I built the current version of Metacity using the package information here:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I'm now getting much better performance with the latest metacity in Oneiric, eg 150-250 fps in glxspheres versus 80-120 in compiz, and 50-60 fps in Alien Arena vs 30-45.
