Bug Description

Binary package hint: calibre

After opening calibre the entire user session will crash and return to the gdm login screen within a minute, give or take. This happens every time calibre is opened, even if the user switches to another application and doesn't perform any task with calibre other than starting it. Command line tools ebook-convert and calibredb add do not crash when used without starting the main program. This problem occurred for the first time this morning after upgrading a large number of packages, and did not occur two days ago (last time I can remember definitely using calibre for an extended period), which was after I'd upgraded to the natty beta. One of the changes in the natty beta in the last two days likely introduced this bug.

This bug persists as of a fresh install of the 11.04 beta 2 on April 18. Calibre is completely unusable. Within one minute of starting the application the entire login session crashes and the user is returned to gdm.

I upgraded to Natty from Maverick just today and this crash is still happening. Actually I tested a theory and it only crashes when running unity but if I switch to the classic Ubuntu setup it runs just fine. So apparantly it has something to do with Unity.

Upgraded to natty on 30th kubuntu version. Calibre hangs system, only way out is hard reset. Before upgrade it was running perfectly. Running latest version through webinstall, NOT from repos.

Bug also present for me. Installed 11.04 last week on Asus X52F laptop. Calibre was working previously in Ubuntu 10.10 under KDE.
Installed Calibre from Ubuntu repos. Using Unity.

I have this problem also, I am on 11.04 and using the classic desktop, not Unity.

I've since stopped using Ubuntu completely in favor of another distribution because of this bug. The complete breakage of calibre effectively breaks the entire desktop for me.

I've found a workaround for this bug. In CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) I went to "Utility" -> "Workarounds" and enabled the "Qt Window Fix" option. No more crashes since.

I just ran into this bug and tried to use the suggested workaround, but my ccsm only shows two items related to unity:
"Ubuntu Unity Plugin" & "Unity MT Grab Handles" and none of those two containes a "Workarounds" tab. Please explain the workaround in more detail

Ohh, I misread, now that I found it I see that you didn't write "Unity" -> "Workarounds" but "Utility" which is a category, that is called "Werkzeuge" in my german Ubuntu.. sorry, for the post, but maybe it helps others who don't read that carefully too ;)

Damn.. The Workaround doesn't work for me.. I just had another crash. Any other ideas? I think I will format my desktop and try out another distro tomorrow... I really want to look into calibre, this program looks nice and I just got my first e-ink reader

I'm using 11.04 and the latest Calibre, which is 0.8.3. The last time I tried to open Calibre (a few minutes ago), the session crashed immediatly. This is very annoying. :(

I have the same problem. I did the fix above and it doesn't crash as often, but it still did for a few times...

I have the same problem. Once opening calibre the entire user session will crash in 1 minute.
