Binary package hint: unity
The Workspace Switcher icon should change its highlight to show what desktop you are currently using.
I.e. instead of the generic icon with the top left quad highlighted, make it so that if you are current in the top right, the icon shows that.

I agree with the OP, I myself wanted t report about this missing feature.
The main point is that with the current behavior of unity you do not know "where you are", and you have to try changing workspace or do the expo to understand it.
