Bug Description

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

Performing test for keyboard hotkeys i've noticed the disable-touchpad key on the Dell Vostro 3500 keyboard (Fn + F6) does not work, I was expecting the touchpad will turn off with this key combo but it does not. Then tested in another partition, where I got Maverick installed, and had the same issue. It does not turn off the touchpad even when a USB mouse is pluged in.

I have a similar problem on my new Dell Latitude 5420 with freshly installed Natty: When pressing the 'disable touchpad'-key (Fn + F5 in my case), a notification pops up displaying graphic of a crossed-out touchpad. Pressing again shows the same, without the cross, as expected. The touch-pad keeps always working, however, as does the 'track-stick'. Problem is the same with/without plugging in an external USB mouse.

Just to expand on details, this bug *is* happening on Dell Vostro 3550 with Ubuntu 11, but the correct shortcut key is Fn + F3. It works as photonic reported (notification popup is displayed correctly, but the touchpad behavior is not modified).

Fn+F6 controls the keyboard lights, and this shortcut works correctly. I am afraid the shortcut icons on this laptop can be misunderstood easily.

After more research, it seems that the problem is derived because the touchpad is being incorrectly detected as a PS/2 mouse. Marking this bug as a duplicate of #760142
