Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

On my System76 Lemur (Ubuntu 10.10, uname -a: "Linux mjumbewu-lemur 2.6.35-28-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 18 18:42:20 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux"), suspend will stop working after I configure the machine to use an external monitor. It does not matter whether I use multiple displays or mirror the same display onto both screens. I use gnome-display-properties to set up my screens. In order to use the computer again I must force a reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Boot computer
2) Connect external monitor (into VGA port)
3) Set up dual heads
4) Disconnect external monitor
5) Close the lid

Expected results:
- Computer goes into standby, as normal.

Actual results:
- Computer remains on and no longer responds to mouse or keyboard. Fan also spins up.

Thanks.

Hey Mjumbe,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period. Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also run 'apport-collect <bug-number>' while running natty, which will add fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team to look at.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

this is happening to me in a lenovo t61 in kubuntu natty when using nouveau drivers. no problem on nvidia drivers though. somewhere I saw that actually this was a problem in X11 and other free drivers were also suffering same symptoms.

this is a bit annoying, hopefully it will be fixed soon...

@Salva, since you have a different video card and seem to have narrowed it to your video driver, I think it would be better for you to file as a separate bug report. If you could re-test against oneiric (or even precise) that would be a help. File the bug using the command:

   ubuntu-bug xorg

which will collect the required logs and such.

One thing that would be helpful is to ssh into the machine after it's 'hung' and collect the output of 'dmesg'. If you can't ssh into it, then that suggests you're seeing a kernel problem, and should file the bug using this command instead:

  ubuntu-bug linux
