Potential segmentation fault, memory leak and cleanup of debug code

Bug Description

The attached patch fixes:

* two potential segmentation fault.
* one occurrence where strcpy() was used to copy a string onto itself which is not recommended.
* two memory leaks
* some cleanup of debug code

I have never seen any of these bugs provoke bad behaviour but why not fix them if there is a patch available? ;-)
