Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

There is no ubuntu icon visible in the top left corner, see the image attached to understand what im talking about.
In fact when i play with the top panel transparency in compizconfig-settingsmanager, i can see the ubuntu icon under the window menu/title, but can not interact with it... pretty annoying...
Using ubuntu natty with latest updates on a toshiba t230 (intel hd graphics)

Did you change your screen configuration before getting the issue?

Jean-Pierre Cloup (jean-pierre-cloup) wrote :

No, i didnt change my screen configuration, im using natty on a fresh install (maybe one week ago), the only files that could be old are in my home folder.
To reproduce it :
- log into the "ubuntu" session
- wait
- unity loads (correctly since a day, before it was always freezing, maybe because of compiz, but for now it seems to load correctly)
- and no ubuntu top left icon on the top panel, theres the indicators, notify-osd for my wifi network, the unity launcher, the "places", the "applications", but nothing on the top left corner.

In fact ive never seen the ubuntu icon without making the panel transparent, so i suspect theres 2 panels loading on top of each other, one with the ubuntu icon, and the other without it. I use unity-2d as a replacement until this bug is fixed (which works perfectly well)

Hope this helps. Please ask for anything you could need, i'll try to answer as i can.

And sorry for my poor english, i'm french...

no worry for your english I'm french as well ;-) Could you add your .xsession-errors from an unity session having the issue? do you use a docked laptop or a similar config?

I saw this today on a projector, so it may be screen-resolution-change
related.

Please tell me how to find this .xsession-errors file, and i'll post it asap. I'll try to change the resolution of my screen too.

Okay, the ubuntu session freezes shortly after start, with no way to interact with it, so no screen resolution change possible.
Anyway here's my .xsession-errors file.

Here's a capture of the screen config gui. It seems that it detects an external monitor, but theres no external monitor plugged!
It was in "clone image" mode, so i changed it to the other option, the ubuntu icon is now present!
The ubuntu session is still broken, as is unity --replace (when logged in to unity-2d) but this maybe compiz-related...
But that's another bug...

the screenshot has 2 screens though? what video card and driver do you use? the bug in mirror mode is a known one, it just seems xorg fails to correctly detect your screen configuration

im using the open source xorg intel driver provided in ubuntu repositories, the default one. Using a intel hd graphics with a pentium u5400 (a gma 4500MHD i think). My laptop is a toshiba t230-136, it functions properly with ubuntu maverick, no problems at all, compiz enabled.
And yes it shows there's 2 screens, but i only have one and i've never connected my laptop to an external monitor.

It's obviously linked to a non existent multimonitor setting! One screen, but two detected! Weird...

With the latest updtates, the problem isn't fixed. It seems the problem is coming from the fact ubuntu recognizes 2 screens on my laptop, but as everybody knows, there's only 1 screen on a laptop ^^. So it may not be a unity problem, but an Xserver problem. Maybe my hardware is suffering from bad detection...
With unity 2d my laptop is perfectly usable, but unity+compiz is hardly usable in this state.
