beep sound is muted under unity

I am not hearing any beep sounds under natty. Beeps are important to me, since it's how irssi notifies me of important messages. I also noticed the following consistent reproducible behavior
Open "sound preferences", under Hardware tab, click "Test speakers" .. The test button also does not produce a beep sound too

That's muted by pulseaudio since it is incredibly annoying ;-)

It is too late in the cycle to consider now, but I'm wondering about
the feasibility of collecting that beep sound as an X event (it does
come through as one, believe it or not) and converting it to a system
sound via libcanberra through either notify osd or compiz.

Merge with bug #486154?

Hi I am not really sure this bug is a dup of #486154 which is more about metacity hitting a bug and not beeping sometimes. While this bug is about unity by design not having the code to beep. Can someone please check whether or not they are the same
